Twitter Takeover A glimpse into the material science labs
Tong Li routinely handles individual atoms as part of her work. She explains how and why on Twitter.
On 6 June 2019, the RUB’s Twitter account will be dedicated to material science, with Professor Tong Li granting insights into her daily routine. She is, among other things, expert for so-called atom probe tomography. Researchers use this method to render the structure of materials visible atom by atom. Tong Li will be explaining how this process works, which other state-of-the-art research methods are deployed in material science labs at RUB, and what other questions the team looks into. To this end, the RUB account @ruhrunibochum will be publishing tweets in the English language for one day.
The Bochum-based researcher uses atom probe tomography for the purpose of analysing catalysts – including those for hydrogen production, because the manufacture of this potential energy carrier of the future still requires a lot of groundwork.
About the researcher
Tong Li has been Junior Professor for the Characterisation of High-Performance Materials at Atomic Scale at RUB since 2017. In spring 2019, her group joined Twitter as @TemApt, intending to grant deeper insights into its research at the new Center for Interface-Dominated High Performance Materials (ZGH). The research building is currently under construction and its inauguration is scheduled for autumn 2019.
