Brand mission statement Built to change

The new claim of our university succinctly illustrates what we stand for: the university is a driver of change and equal opportunity in the Ruhr region.

"Built to change – that is our foundation, our guiding principle, and our mission for the future – as an engine for an entire region," says Principal Martin Paul.

Ruhr University has always been a place where talented people, regardless of their social or geographical background, can follow their academic path and develop. We draw our academic excellence from this diversity and from close interdisciplinary cooperation. Since 1965, Ruhr University has been a driver of change from a mining region to a knowledge region. All this is embodied in our new claim: Built to change.

The claim was developed in a participatory mission statement process with the entire university public; more than 2,000 members took part in workshops and digital opinion surveys.

The consensus in the discussion groups was the importance Ruhr University in its role as an engine for change and advancement. Both in its historical impact on the Ruhr region as a real laboratory for social transformation, but also as a mission for the future. The need to continue to change itself, to remember the reformist gene of the university, was also emphasized. Therefore, "change" was uncovered as a central idea and translated into the claim.
