Award RUB offers researchers the best working conditions

A seal of approval from the European Union certifies Ruhr University Bochum offers its researchers good working conditions and an optimal working environment.

Ruhr University Bochum was awarded the “HR Excellence in Research Award” by the European Commission on January 4, 2024. With this seal of approval, the EU Commission honors scientific institutions that offer scientists both good working conditions and an appropriate working environment. “We have worked towards the EU award in particular in order to further advance the profile of Ruhr University, also in the field of personnel development for science, and to further improve the working conditions for researchers. We also want to strengthen our position as an attractive employer on the international job market for scientists,” says Rector Prof. Dr. Martin Paul.

Seal is another incentive

The European Commission is committed to excellent working and research conditions in the European Research Area and strives to harmonize them as well as to establish the profession of researcher more firmly. As a basis for this, the principles of the European Charter for Researchers and the Code of Conduct for the Recruitment of Researchers were published in 2005. With the help of the Human Resources Strategy for Researchers (HRS4R), universities and research institutes can implement these principles in their institutions and establish improvement processes.

“Ruhr University is committed to the goals and principles of the Charter and the Code and would like to improve the working conditions and hiring processes for its researchers. The seal is a further incentive for us to further optimize internal university processes and bring them into line with international standards. This means, for example, that career prospects in science can be made more transparent and that players at Ruhr University can be better networked for more synergy effects,European Charter for Researchers emphasizes Prof. Dr. Denise Manahan-Vaughan, Vice Rector for Structure, Strategy and Planning.

The action plan submitted will now be implemented over the next few months. It includes, for example, the development of training formats on the topic of unconscious bias and the implementation of a far-reaching internationalization strategy.
