Short Interview Humboldt-Fellow explores impact of economic development initiative

Utilizing artificial intelligence-based techniques and computer simulations, an urban planner from Nigeria works together with the group of Professor Andreas Rienow at Ruhr University Bochum.

Dr. Oluwafemi Odunsi studies the current and future effects of an economic development cluster initiative on the settlement expansion and ecosystems of Abeokuta, Nigeria, and its metropolitan area. He comes from Sagamu town in Nigeria and lectures at Olabisi Onabanjo University in Ogun State, Nigeria. In the interview he introduces himself.

Dr. Odunsi, what fascinates you about using artificial intelligence in geography?
I am fascinated by its ability to acquire large amounts of geospatial data, learn from it, and autonomously perform tasks, the very high speed of data processing and the precision of the results. This helps us as researchers to gain meaningful insights, identify patterns, and make predictions about Earth's systems and human activities. It also helps us to provide policy and decision makers with scientific evidence-based information for sustainable planning and development.

What effects does an economic development initiative have?
The economic development cluster initiative in Ogun State is important to drive the overall growth and development of the State. It will enhance the livelihood of its residents by providing the physical, social, economic, technological and structural change effects needed for investment and business opportunities to thrive. There are six clusters, and I am researching on the prospects of Abeokuta Cluster which has the capital city as its pivot.

For me, Ruhr University Bochum stands for …
… intellectualism, discovery, talent development and inclusion.

What is your favorite place on campus?
The center of the University with the mensa, Audimax, library and the Uni-Center.

Why do you like it so much?
Because it was my first place of contact as a newcomer and is a well-planned area of the University with its beauty and elegance. As a town planner, I am interested since it is the hub for academic, cultural, and social activities. This place provides people with essential services, resources, and spaces for learning, interaction, networking, and recreation.

I found the uniqueness of Ruhr University Bochum in allowing transport infrastructure like subway station, bus stops and highway systems to be accommodated within its center. This not only allows for efficient transport services but also links the University to its host city of Bochum. It is really a great idea in campus and city planning integration.

My favorite German words are …
… sehr gut, bitte, danke, Entschuldigung.

Thank you very much!
