Event announcement Talk on Anti-Muslim Racism and Opportunity for Exchange

The talk will be followed by a Safer Space for Muslim students. This protected space offers the opportunity for exchange and mutual empowerment.

On June 26, 2024, a talk on anti-Muslim racism will take place at Ruhr University Bochum. Speaker Karima Benbrahim will talk about the origins, manifestations, underlying beliefs, and ramifications of this form of group-focused misanthropy. Benbrahim is the head of the Information and Documentation Center for Anti-Racism Work in North Rhine-Westphalia (IDA-NRW) and a member of the Independent Expert Group on Anti-Muslim Racism of the Ministry of the Interior. The talk is open to all interested parties. It will be followed by an exclusive group discussion led by Karima Benbrahim, specifically designed as a Safer Space for Muslim students and those perceived as Muslims. Both events are organized by the Anti-Discrimination Office of Ruhr University Bochum. They will be held in the German language. For English-language events, please contact the Anti-Discrimination Office.

Lecture “Anti-Muslim racism - an (in)visible phenomenon”

Where does anti-Muslim racism originate and how does it manifest? What is the relationship between “Critcism of Islam”, “Islamophobia”, “Anti-Islamic Sentiment” and “Muslim Hatred”, which are often used interchangeably? What beliefs underlie this form of misanthropy? Karima Benbrahim will address these questions in her talk and discuss the effects that anti-Muslim racism can have on students and staff. Afterwards, there will be space for reflection, questions and discussion.

The talk will take place on June 26 from 2 to 3.30 p.m. It is open to all interested parties who register by June 24 via email at antidiskriminierung@rub.de. The location will be announced after registration.

Safer Space for Muslim students

The Israel/Gaza war and its impacts are a great burden for many Muslim students. There is a notable desire for a safe setting that allows dialogue, empowerment, and the processing of grief. Led by Karima Benbrahim, participants will collaborate to develop strategies for navigating the current climate. This Safer Space will take place on June 26 from 4 to 6 p.m.

Muslim students and those who are perceived as Muslim can take part. Interested persons must register by June 24 via email at antidiskriminierung@rub.de. The location will be announced after registration.
