Shanghai Ranking Ruhr University on its Way to the Top

Ruhr University's ranking improved significantly compared to the previous year. The materials sciences in particular shine.

Ruhr University Bochum has improved significantly in the renowned Shanghai University Ranking. This is confirmed by the “Academic Ranking of World Universities”, which, since 2003, has been published annually by Shanghai Jiao Tong University. In terms of research performance and quality of education, Ruhr University ranks between position 12 and 22 in Germany, narrowly missing out on the top ten. In an international comparison, Ruhr University Bochum is ranked between 201 and 300, thus belonging to the top one percent of around 25,000 universities worldwide. Compared to the previous year, Ruhr University has improved its standing by one category; last year it was placed in between 301 and 400.

What is assessed

As quality criteria, the ranking takes into account the quality of education - measured by the number of alumni who have won Nobel Prizes or Fields Medals - the quality of the research environment (measured by the number of Nobel Prize winners and most-cited scientists worldwide working at an institution), research performance, which is measured by the number of scientific publications and those in particularly top-class journals, and academic performance with regard to the size of the institution.

No European university made it into the top ten of the best international universities. The best German university is Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität Munich, which is ranked 43rd.

Ruhr University also made it into the international top field with regard to individual subject disciplines. Materials research is ranked 44th globally, while substance research, statistics and psychology made it into the top 150 and chemistry into the top 200 worldwide.
