Conference What became of Russia's attempt at democracy in the 1990s

At Ruhr University Bochum, Nobel Peace Prize winner Dmitry Muratov and other renowned personalities will analyze Russia's development since the collapse of the Soviet Union.

Authoritarian developments in Russia dominate international attention. The war of aggression against Ukraine calls the European peace order into question. Yet the decade following the collapse of the Soviet Union was a time of democratic awakening. What happened then and since? What went wrong? Leading voices from political and social science, journalism, literature and human rights work will analyze this at the conference “An attempt at democracy: Russia 1989-1999. Economy, politics, society, culture and media” from 10 to 12 June 2025 at Ruhr University Bochum (Event Center). Media and the public are cordially invited.
