Room of Silence expanded

A second place of rest for all

Ruhr University is expanding its “Room of Silence” concept. A second location is now available in the GB building. Operated by the AStA, this new Room of Silence is open to all members of the university community.

Pause. Take a deep breath. Recharge your batteries: Since October 2022, students and staff have been able to retreat to a place in the cafeteria building where they find peace and quiet amidst the hustle and bustle of everyday university life. The successful concept of the Room of Silence has now been expanded to include an additional location. Nestled in the former print shop in the entrance area (GB 02/133), the AStA operates this new Room of Silence, open to all members of the university.

Opening hours

The Room of Silence in the cafeteria building is open during the opening hours of A_KAFFEE (German).

The Room of Silence in the GB building is open Monday to Friday from 12:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. More information can be found here (German).

The concept of the existing room also applies to the new Room of Silence: it is a space that caters to spiritual needs and individual prayer, as Professor Isolde Karle, Vice-Rector for Diversity, Inclusion and Talent Development, explains. It’s also a place for those seeking tranquility to focus on their health and well-being.

The rules therefore include always treating other people with respect, switching off devices such as smartphones or laptops, and refraining from working or eating in the room. The extended terms of use can be found here.
