New building at Mark 51°7
Faculty of Computer Science to Relocate in 2032
The new building will also strengthen Bochum’s position as an IT location.
The Faculty of Computer Science will get new headquarters on the Mark 51°7 innovation site. In December 2025, the state of North Rhine-Westphalia approved the implementation of the new building. The employees are expected to move into the new building in 2032. The tendering process was published on February 9, 2026. Ruhr University, as the building owner, is concluding the contracts for the planning, construction, and operation of the building for a period of 20 years.
The new location for the computer science department, which includes the Horst Görtz Institute for IT Security (HGI), is being built on the former Opel site in the vicinity of the Max Planck Institute for Security and Privacy (MPI-SP). Many IT companies and partner firms of the faculty, such as ETAS, VW Infotainment, VMRay, and Physec, have already settled on the site.
The THINK and ZESS research buildings are also located there. With the new IT location, the innovation area continues to grow into a high-performance high-tech campus, creating additional synergies for university and non-university research and enabling more intensive cooperation with companies and start-ups.
In addition, the new building strengthens Bochum as an IT location. The CASA Cluster of Excellence, which is closely linked to the faculty and HGI, conducts research into pressing future issues in the field of IT that perfectly match the vision of Ruhr University Bochum and TU Dortmund University who are currently applying together as Ruhr Innovation Lab in the Excellence Strategy.
Despite the new headquarters, the Faculty of Computer Science will remain present on campus. The creation of so-called anchor areas will ensure optimal support for students and exchange within Ruhr University.
