Climate-neutral technologies

First Meeting of the German Partners of the European Network ECCSEL

German research contributes to the world's largest network of research institutions working on carbon capture, utilization, and storage (CCUS) and geothermal energy.

The first official meeting of its German partners marks the start of a new phase of cooperation and networking between German research institutions in the European research network ECCSEL (European Carbon Dioxide Capture and Storage Laboratory Infrastructure). ECCSEL currently connects seven European member countries, 55 partners, and more than 150 research facilities. This unique alliance facilitates simplified access to research infrastructure and supports joint cross-border research to accelerate innovation and the implementation of climate-neutral technologies.

RWE Power is hosting the launch event, which takes place at the Innovation Center in Niederaußem. RWE has been operating a CO₂ capture pilot plant here since 2009 as part of a CCU campus that is used in several national and international CCUS research projects and is participating in ECCSEL.

Cooperation partners

After Germany joined ECCSEL last year on the initiative of the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy (BMWE), the first German research institutions and industrial companies which have joined the ECCSEL network are:
•    Ruhr University Bochum
•    Technical University of Darmstadt
•    Forschungszentrum Jülich
•    GFZ Helmholtz Centre for Geoscience
•    Karlsruhe Institute for Technology
•    University of Stuttgart
•    RWE Power
•    Everllence.

The German ECCSEL network node is led by the coordinators Prof. Dr. Francesca di Mare, Ruhr University Bochum and Dr. Jochen Ströhle, Technical University of Darmstadt. The advisory board includes representatives from Forschungszentrum Jülich, Everllence, and RWE Power.

„By joining forces under the umbrella of ECCSEL, the participating German research institutions and industrial companies are providing important impetus for the further development and application of CCUS technologies in the German, European, and global context.“ says Prof. Dr. Francesca di Mare, Ruhr-University Bochum.

„There is considerable interest in participating in ECCSEL from industry and research, and the number of German partners contributing their expertise, test facilities, and laboratory equipment will continue to grow rapidly.“ says Dr. Jochen Ströhle, Technical University of Darmstadt.

„We are delighted that the first meeting of the German ECCSEL partners is taking place at RWE's Innovation Center in Niederaussem, which stands for active innovation and cooperation in the development of technologies to achieve climate neutrality.“ says Dr. Peter Moser, RWE Power.
