Doing a PhD in the Ruhr Innovation Lab – is structured and collaborative rather than frustrating and lonely.
For years, working in solitude on profound questions to eventually achieve academic recognition – that might have been the case once. Today, the PhD phase looks entirely different. Since the first Excellence Initiative around 20 years ago, universities have been making progress, following the Ruhr region’s model. PhD students can now apply for funds for their own events, go abroad or become peer reviewers.
What other opportunities are available to doctoral students in Bochum and Dortmund? Podcast-Host Sven-Daniel Gettys discusses this topic with Dr. Christiane Wüllner, Managing Director of RUB Research School, and Prof. Dr. Doris Reiter, Managing Director of Dortmund Graduate School of Physics, in Episode 4 of “Think.Try.Transform,” the podcast of the Ruhr Innovation Lab.
In this episode, you will learn how the idea for the overarching graduate school came about, which opportunities PhD students can take advantage of today, what experiences the two managing directors have had (with academic careers) and what PhD students experience.
