In the App

The digital student ID is here

Goodbye chip card: Starting in the summer semester 2026, Ruhr University will introduce a digital student ID.

Starting in the summer semester 2026, Ruhr University will introduce a digital student ID. Students can now access their new ID in the “RUB mobile” app. It is stored in the app’s digital wallet and includes key student details such as name, date of birth, matriculation number, and period of validity.

How it works:

  • Download the latest version of the “RUB Mobile” app to your smartphone.
  • Open the digital student ID in the app’s wallet.
  • Link it to your RUB login via the “Account management” section.

During the transition period, the previous chip card remains valid. Both forms of ID can be used in parallel. With the full transition in the winter semester 2026/27, the old ID formats will no longer be valid.

Always up to date and available anytime

The digital ID is available on your smartphone at all times. It is valid for one semester and is automatically renewed each term, provided students are re-registered or on approved leave.

Please note:

The digital student ID does not include a photo and is therefore not valid as official identification. For exams and other situations requiring identity verification, an official photo ID must still be presented.

If you cannot or prefer not to use the app, you can verify your student status using a current certificate of enrollment.

Further features planned

The app is continuously being developed and expanded. In the coming weeks, the semester ticket will also be made available via the app, making the separate Ride app unnecessary.
