On October 2, 2026, the long wait will finally come to an end: At 4 p.m., the German Science and Humanities Council (Wissenschaftsrat) will hold a press conference to announce which universities and consortia will receive Excellence Strategy funding for a seven-year period beginning in 2027. Among the contenders is the Ruhr Innovation Lab, a consortium of Ruhr University Bochum and TU Dortmund University. So keep your fingers crossed!

Starting in 2027, a maximum of 15 universities or consortia will receive funding. Ten spots have already been awarded to candidates that have successfully defended their titles. Eleven applicants are now competing for the remaining five spots.
