I Connect the Perspectives of Students and Lecturers

As part of the Collaborative Research Center “Virtual Lifeworlds”, Kristin Flugel explores students’ knowledge practives in the age of AI.

I combine a perspective rooted in educational science with interdisciplinary questions, as well as the viewpoints of lecturers with those of students. As a research associate in the Humanities Collaborative Research Center 1567 “Virtual Lifeworlds,” I investigate how students today – in light of the allure of generative AI – acquire (specialized) knowledge, and I am interested in the approaches and knowledge that lecturers convey and test in exams. Further, I analyze to what extent it still makes sense to distinguish between analog study and learning practices (such as taking notes with a pen on a notepad) and practices that incorporate digital technologies. To this end, I conduct ethnographic observations of knowledge transmission and acquisition in seminars and carry out interviews and discussions. One insight: Students’ knowledge practices have long combined analog and digital elements – perhaps they should be understood as “post-digital” or “virtual”?
