I Connect Fundamental Research and Industrial Application

According to Jan Sehrt, additive manufacturing will become more robust, sustainable, and directly applicable across industries only through a mutual exchange between research and practice.

I connect fundamental research with industrial application in the field of additive manufacturing. At the Center of Competence Additive Manufacturing (COCAM) at Ruhr University Bochum, we build bridges between materials science, mechanical engineering, and data science. We integrate theory and experiment, simulation and lab testing, prototype and production environment. This creates digital twins of processes that we analyze with sensors, evaluate, and control in real time—from laboratory scale to production facilities. COCAM pools our expertise to develop scalable, resource-efficient solutions and transfer them rapidly into practice. We bring together researchers, students, and engineers so that insights from academia find their way into application—and questions from industry return to fundamental research. This two-way bridge ensures quality, accelerates innovation, and makes additive manufacturing more robust, sustainable, and directly applicable across a wide range of uses.
