International law Online discussion about Russia’s aggression against Ukraine

RUB experts discuss the implications of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine for international law.

Russia’s invasion of Ukraine has shocked the world – including the lawyers of RUB’s Institue of International Law of Peace and Armed Conflict (IFHV). In an online event, IFHV experts discuss the current situation. If you would like to participate, you can register online at no cost. The discussion in English language takes place on 8 March 2022 from 5 p.m. until 6.30 p.m.

“Russia’s invasion is not only a blatant violation of the legal norms of the UN, but a slap in the face of the international moral order,” as the organizers write in their announcement of the event. “We as international lawyers find ourselves in a state of shock which will only slowly give way to reflections about the implications for international law. The relevance of our entire discipline has been called into question.” However, the experts do not want to remain speechless. The aim of the online event is to share and discuss thoughts, perspectives, and frustrations regarding international law in a constructive way.

A conversation with:

  • Professor Pierre Thielbörger, The Role of Courts in an Increasingly Lawless International Order
  • Professor Hans-Joachim Heintze, European Security Architecture and Nuclear Weapons
  • Lisa Cohen, Cyber Warfare in the Ukrainian Conflict
  • Timeela Manandhar, Non-State Actors reactions to the Russian Aggression
  • Maximilian Bertamini, Time to recalibrate International Law?
