Gender Studies Hongwei Bao is Marie Jahoda Fellow 2024

A film screening and a public lecture are planned during the fellowship.

Dr. Hongwei Bao works in Media Studies at the University of Nottingham, where he is co-director of the Center for Critical Theory and Cultural Studies. He will be in Bochum for the Marie Jahoda Fellowship in November and December 2024. Bao researches queer cultures and aesthetics with a focus on China. He has also curated numerous film festivals. He completed his PhD in Gender Studies and Cultural Studies at the University of Sydney in 2011.

During his stay in Bochum, Bao will be involved in research activities around the international workshop "Queer Avantgarde", which will take place in December. Bao will work with Professor Änne Söll from the Institute of Art History. Together with Dr. Susanne Huber from the University of Bremen, the two of them are also the publisher of the series "Oyster. Feminist and Queer Approaches to Arts, Cultures, and Genders"

Dates

  • 28 November, 7.30 pm: Screening of the documentary Drag Up! in the Oval Office Bar, Schauspielhaus Bochum. This will be followed by a discussion with Hongwei Bao in his role as producer. 
  • 4 December, 6.15 pm: Hongwei Bao will give a public lecture as part of the MaJaC colloquium. The title of the lecture is "Art of the Cool Kids: Locating Queer Art in China". The venue is Universitätsstraße 105, room EG 14. 
  • 4-5 December: The Queer Avantgarde workshop starts on December 4th at Universitätsstraße 105. The programme on December 5th will take place in the Ruhr-Universität art collection. Registrations are possible until November 30th by email
